Martha Chiu, Ph.D. is a bilingual (Mandarin Chinese/English), licensed psychologist and counselor educator with a longstanding interest in the improvement of mental health services for Chinese people. She received a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Harvard University in the field of East Asian Studies and earned a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Stanford University. Dr. Chiu has over 25 years of experience in direct clinical service delivery and teaching/supervision in the U.S. and Asia, including 8 years of clinical practice and counselor education and supervision on the ground in China (2007 – 2015). She served as a psychologist at the United Family Hospital in Shanghai (2007 – 2008) and Beijing (2012 – 2016). At the Capital Normal University in Beijing (2008 – 2011) she taught Applied Psychology graduate level courses and provided clinical supervision for counselors at its Student Counseling Center. As an Associate Professor and Director of Academic Affairs (China) for Palo Alto University (PAU) she established and directed PAU’s M.A. of Counseling program in China (2010 – 2015). More recently, Dr. Chiu is a co-founder of the Institute for the Advancement of Counseling Excellence (2015 – ) and served as a Professor at Biola University’s Rosemead School of Psychology (2016 – 2021), where she established, directed, and taught courses for an online Certificate in Integrative Counseling program to improve counseling in Asia and other parts of the world.
